The Hutchins family has deep roots in Cougar land. Micayla and her sister Mallory are both members of the Ada cheer squad. Her brother played football for the Cougs and her mother is a teacher in Ada schools. She was also the one who really got the idea of cheer circling in the minds of her daughters.
“Mom cheered when she was in school and she really kind of planted the idea of being involved in cheer in me and my sister but I didn’t really get started until the seventh grade,” said Micayla.
Now a senior, Micayla has progressed well according to first year cheer coach Randi Wilkins.
“She is an amazing cheerleader and great leader. She is one of just two seniors on the squad this year and she’s taken the initiative to be a strong helper because a lot of the girls who come to the high school haven’t been involved in a real cheer setting before because our middle school program is more of a spirit squad,” said Wilkins.
And though she’s doing an excellent job in that role, it hasn’t been so easy for the laid-back Hutchins.
“I’m not a real outgoing person and I lead more by example so it’s been a bit of a challenge for me to become more vocal with the girls,” said Hutchins who also keeps busy in the Spanish Club, Japanese Interact Club, Visual Arts Club and National Honor Society.
Covid-19 has really limited the action of the cheer squad this year according to Wilkins.
“We didn’t have camp this summer to start with which was disappointing. During football we weren’t allowed to stunt at all and during basketball games we have to cheer up in the stands instead of down on the floor. We haven’t had pep rallies and it’s also limited our practice time in trying to get everyone together at once. But through it all Micayla has maintained a positive attitude and helped keep the girls focused on what we can do,” said Wilkins.
After graduation, Micayla plans to attend Tulsa University with an eye towards studying creative writing and possibly
