VYPE: What motivates you?
Jerzie O’Neal: In tennis, I am motivated by the feeling of progress and satisfaction from overcoming obstacles.
VYPE: Who are some of your biggest influences or role models? Why?
JO: My coach and family are my biggest influences and role models because they have always supported and believed in me, both on and off the court. My coach has taught me the importance of perseverance, which is a lesson I carry with me in all aspects of my life. My family has been my rock, providing me with tremendous support by cheering me on, making sure I stay hydrated by refilling my water constantly.
VYPE: What teacher has had the biggest impact on your life? How?
JO: The teacher who has had the biggest impact on my life is Ms. Black. She was my high school yearbook teacher, and always taught me to follow my heart. Her kindness has made an everlasting impact on my life.
VYPE: What has it taken to be successful in your sports?
JO: To be successful in tennis, it has taken a combination of physical and mental dedication and hard work. Tennis is as much a mental game as it is physical. The ability to stay calm under pressure is essential for success.
VYPE: What has been the highlight moment of your career?
JO: The highlight of my career was placing first at regionals and making it to state.
VYPE: Is there an opponent that you enjoy beating the most? Why?
JO: I enjoy playing Duncan; they always provide a strong challenge.
VYPE: What clubs and campus activities are you involved with?
JO: World Travelers Club, Spanish Club, Japanese Club and Art Club.
VYPE: What are your plans after high school?
JO: My plan is to attend an accredited university and obtain a four-year degree. I believe this will provide me with the necessary skills and knowledge to pursue my career goals.
VYPE: What does it mean to you to represent your school and community when you play?
JO: Representing Ada High School and the community when I play means that I am not just playing for myself, but I am playing for something bigger than myself. It means that I am representing the values, traditions and reputation of my school and community. It also means that I should conduct myself with integrity, sportsmanship and respect for others, as I am not just playing for myself.
