Ada’s Makaviya Nelson – Basketball Spotlight – Presented by Seth Wadley Chevrolet Ada

At the center of Ada High School’s basketball court, Makaviya Nelson, a talented player with a story to tell, reflects on her journey, influences and dreams for the future.

Makaviya holds Coach Menee close to her heart, describing her as a confidante and source of understanding: “Coach Menee has to be my favorite coach because I can vent to her about anything, and she always understands me.”

As she navigated the challenges of the game, Makaviya found inspiration in her teammate Shayla Wofford, recognizing her for a meticulous approach to the sport. “Shayla Wofford is a player I will always admire because of how detail-oriented she is,” Makaviya acknowledged.

Beyond the court, Mrs. Freeman, a dedicated teacher, made a lasting impact on Makaviya.

“Mrs. Freeman is my favorite teacher because she is so intentional with everything she does,” she said, appreciating the influence of educators beyond the game.

The off-season became a period of recovery and skill refinement for Makaviya: “I have fully recovered from my injury and have worked on my skill.”

Basketball, for Makaviya, transcends the court, offering valuable life lessons. “Do everything to the fullest of your ability because it can all be taken away so fast,” she imparted, emphasizing the importance of giving one’s best effort.

One of her cherished memories encapsulates the strength of community and resilience.

“Playing on my torn ACL for a season and watching my community come together and support me is my favorite memory,” Makaviya recalled.

Approaching the upcoming season, Makaviya’s goals are rooted in enjoyment and inclusivity: “I hope to just actually have fun and include everyone and help them enjoy our basketball program.”

Anticipating each game with excitement, Makaviya looks forward to the challenges and triumphs the season holds. “I’m looking forward to every game that comes this season,” she stated, ready to embrace the competition.

Post-high school, Makaviya envisions a path in the beauty and skincare industry. “My plans after high school are to attend cosmetology school and soon after attend esthetician school.”
