ADA COUGARS
COACH: Terry Swopes
OUTLOOK
After a strong postseason showing a year ago, the Ada High School boys tennis team enters the new season with momentum, experience, and depth. Head coach Terry Swopes is confident in what this group can accomplish as they look to build on last season’s success.
“The boys are coming off of a top five finish at state last season and are returning the entire team, plus adding some talented freshmen,” Swopes said. “They will be looking to be contenders again this season.”
Leading the Cougars is Gus Byrd, the No. 1 singles player and the tone-setter for the program. “Gus is the number one player on our team and plays 1 singles for us,” Swopes said. “He is a talented tennis player and an incredible leader. He leads by the example he sets every day.” Byrd’s consistency and leadership at the top of the lineup give Ada a reliable anchor in every match.
Another key piece is underclassman Drake Cody, who already has postseason experience. “Drake played for us last year as a freshman and made it all the way to the state finals in 2 doubles,” Swopes said. “He has worked hard and improved even more. He is an excellent leader and extremely talented person.” Cody’s growth adds even more strength to Ada’s doubles and overall lineup.

Matthew Anderson represents the Cougars, combining excellence on the court with leadership off it. “Matthew is an excellent tennis player and an outstanding leader,” Swopes said. “He is also the student council president at the high school. He is a hard worker and an incredible teammate.” His presence reflects the culture Ada tennis continues to build.

Depth is a major strength for the Cougars, starting with returning starters Owen Moon, Leyton Jacobs, and Cedar Thomas. “Owen Moon is a returning starter,” Swopes said. “Played 1 doubles last year and placed 4th at state. Excellent player.” Swopes also highlighted Jacobs, saying, “Leyton Jacobs is a returning starter. Played 2 singles at state last season and placed in the top eight. Excellent player.” Thomas adds more postseason experience. “Cedar Thomas is a returning starter,” Swopes said. “Played 2 doubles for us last season and was state runner-up. Excellent player.”
Senior Andy Jolly brings versatility and work ethic. “Andy played a number of tournaments for us last year in various roles,” Swopes said. “He is an excellent player and incredible worker.” Freshman Corbin Smith is another name to watch. “Corbin is an upcoming freshman,” Swopes said. “He is an incredible and he will have a change of breaking into the varsity lineup.”
With a full roster returning, proven postseason success, and strong leadership throughout the lineup, the Ada boys tennis team enters the season ready to contend once again at the highest level.
