Replacing an entire championship-winning team is no easy task, but Ada boys tennis head coach Terry Swopes is embracing the challenge. With last season’s state title squad consisting entirely of seniors, this year’s varsity lineup will feature all new faces—two freshmen, two sophomores, and two juniors. “They are all talented tennis players, but inexperienced when it comes to varsity tennis,” Swopes said. “I believe they will all learn quickly, however, and have a great season.” While the Cougars may be rebuilding, they are not backing down from competition.
Leading the way for Ada is junior Gus Byrd, who steps into the role of team MVP. Byrd saw limited action last season but gained valuable experience stepping in when injuries affected the lineup. Now, he’s ready to take on a leadership role. “Gus is a gifted tennis player and excellent leader,” Swopes said. “He will be a big part of our success this year.” His skill and composure will be critical in helping guide a young team through the season.
One of the most exciting newcomers to watch is freshman Leyton Jacobs. Despite his age, Jacobs has already put in the work to elevate his game and earn a varsity spot. “Leyton is a freshman this year and will play on the varsity tennis team,” Swopes said. “He has worked incredibly hard to improve his game and is looking to make a big impact for us this year.” His dedication and work ethic set him apart, and he could quickly become one of Ada’s key contributors.
While talent is essential, leadership is just as important, and junior Owen Moon provides that steady presence. Moon may not always get the recognition, but his influence on the team is undeniable. “Owen is a talented tennis player and an incredible leader,” Swopes said. “He is a leader for our team and makes everyone around him better.” His ability to motivate his teammates and set an example will be invaluable as the young squad finds its footing.
Beyond the tennis court, Ada players are proving their versatility and character. Sophomore Andy Jolly, who balances his commitment to the team with his involvement in FFA, exemplifies hard work and dedication. “Andy is joining our tennis team this year,” Swopes said. “He is an incredibly hard worker, both in tennis and FFA. He is an excellent leader in bothactivities.” Meanwhile, Matthew Anderson represents the team’s character and integrity both on and off the court. “Matthew is an outstanding tennis player and an even better person,” Swopes said. “He has a servant’s heart and always does the right thing.”
The 2025 season may be one of transition for Ada, but Swopes believes his players are up for the challenge. With talent, leadership, and a commitment to improvement, the Cougars are ready to forge their own legacy.
