The Ada boys golf team enters the 2025 season with a mix of young talent and experienced leadership, ready to take on the challenge of moving up to Class 5A. Head coach Robert Powell acknowledges the uphill battle but remains optimistic about his squad’s potential. “We are still a very young group with very little depth,” Powell said. “We’ll probably only have six or seven players total, with just two who have much tournament experience.” Despite the limited roster, Ada has the pieces to be competitive, led by sophomore standout Drake Kanuch, who finished fourth at last year’s Class 4A State Tournament.

Kanuch is expected to be a key leader for the Cougars this season. As Ada’s most experienced tournament player, he has already proven himself against top competition and is poised for another strong year. “Drake is my most experienced player as far as tournament golf is concerned,” Powell said. “I expect him to have another strong season in 2025.” His ability to perform under pressure will be crucial as Ada transitions into the tougher 5A classification.

While Kanuch leads the way, Powell is also excited about the development of sophomore Kash Taylor-Rogers. “Kash was one of my top five players last season and picked up some valuable tournament experience,” Powell said. “He has grown physically since last year and hits the ball much farther now. I expect him to be much better this year.” With increased distance and confidence, Taylor-Rogers has the potential to be a difference-maker for the Cougars.

Another key piece for Ada is junior Couper Taylor-Rogers, a two-time state tournament qualifier who provides leadership and accountability. “He is the player who holds all the other players accountable for being at the right place at the right time,” Powell said. “I really feel like Couper will be a solid performer this season.” His presence ensures the team stays focused and prepared for each tournament.

Although depth remains a challenge, Powell believes Ada can hold its own in 5A and earn a spot among the state’s top programs. “It looks like we will be a 5A team this year, and I feel like we will be a top 10 team in that class,” he said. With Kanuch’s leadership, Taylor-Rogers’ improvement, and Couper Taylor-Rogers’ reliability, the Cougars have a foundation to build on as they strive for postseason success.
